England have extended their flawless record in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over Andorra at Villa Park, though the performance raised further questions about head coach Thomas Tuchel’s tactical approach.
An own goal by Christian Garcia in the 25th minute and a header from Declan Rice in the 67th minute secured the win, keeping the Group K leaders on course for next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The match highlighted England’s ongoing struggle to convert dominance into convincing displays, a concern that has persisted under Tuchel. Despite controlling possession, the team lacked creativity in the final third, prompting a frustrated demeanor from the sidelines.
Tuchel, who succeeded Gareth Southgate with promises of an attacking style to end England’s trophy drought since 1966, has now overseen five games, including a 1-0 win over Andorra in June and a 3-1 friendly loss to Senegal. The German coach, facing pressure to forge a clear team identity, called for more “energy” but saw his side labor against Andorra’s defensive setup.
Debutant Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest brought composure to midfield in place of the injured Jude Bellingham, while Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke filled key roles. Madueke’s cross led to Garcia’s own goal, marking his fourth goal involvement in eight internationals.
The second half saw improved dynamism, with Eze and Marcus Rashford testing Andorra’s Iker Alvarez, though Anderson’s debut goal was denied by a fine save. Reece James, preferred at right-back over Trent Alexander-Arnold, delivered a precise cross for Rice’s decisive header.
England’s next challenge comes Tuesday against Group K rivals Serbia in Belgrade, where Tuchel will seek a more authoritative performance.
